As Trade Secretary, Mar saw the potential of the IT-BPO industry and was given leeway by then President Estrada to ensure that this could take root in the Philippines. In the year 2000, there was no Sykes, no Convergys, no eTelecare, and no People Support. Mar established the Contact Center Association of the Philippines, an umbrella group which would go on to promote the country as a destination for IT-BPO companies. Because of his foresight, an industry built from scratch is now projected to earn $15-billion (USD) in 2016.
