In three separate gatherings of Daang Matuwid in Negros Occidental, Governor Freddie Marañon trumpeted the great progress of the province’s IT-BPO industry in the creation of jobs for Negrenses.

“It is Mar Roxas that started the call center industry in our province, and it’s still growing. Our BPO center has already created more than 20 thousand jobs,” Marañon said proudly.

The IT-BPO industry has employed over a million Filipinos nationwide and is one of the largest profit-generating sectors in the country, and Roxas was instrumental for its birth and subsequent growth. Back when he was still the Secretary of Trade and Industry, he pushed for the promotion of foreign investment in the Philippines, particularly by revising RA 7916, which allowed for buildings or floors in buildings to register as economic zones under the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA). BPO companies setting up in PEZA-accredited areas were exempt from paying local and national taxes, encouraging multinational companies to set up operations in the country.

Ang kada isa sa kanila, may suweldo na P15,000 hanggang P18,000 kada buwan,” said Roxas, who visited Silay City, Bago City, and Bacolod City on Tuesday (February 16).

A crucial part of Roxas’ platform is the strengthening of the country’s manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism industries, which would provide jobs and allow Filipinos to sustain their families without needing to go abroad.

Under Daang Matuwid, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) will also expand its vocational training offering to develop skills that match the demands of the job market.
