Secretary of the Interior and Local Government Mar Roxas gave a timely piece of advice to the municipal mayors in the Visayas region: Beware of presidential aspirants who will lure you with make-believe promises just to garner votes for next year’s national elections.

This came after Roxas stood as the guest speaker for the League of Municipalities of the Philippines’ (LMP) Visayas Island Cluster Conference, which was held on Thursday (September 3) in Iloilo City and was attended by about 300 municipal mayors from the Visayas region.

Roxas also warned the Visayan mayors that there would be people in 2016 who will aspire for a higher position while being motivated by twisted intentions.

According to the Secretary, these are the people who want to destroy the very foundation of Daang Matuwid and good governance in order to bring back the old system of blatant corruption and “palakasan system” in government.

“Tayo, malinaw na malinaw na nasa Daang Matuwid tayo na kung saan kahit hindi kayo sumusulat, kahit hindi tayo nag-uusap, kahit hindi kayo nagpapadala ng alimango, ng bangus, ng pastillas o kung ano mang palatandaan para maalala ang inyong bayan, ang bawat isang bayan ay may mga proyektong nagpapataas ng antas ng pamumuhay ng tao sa inyong nasasakupan,“ Roxas pointed out, referring to the Aquino administration’s fair and equal execution of projects such as the SalinTubig program, which brought clean, potable water to waterless barangays; Bottom-Up Budgeting, wherein LGUs craft the projects needed by their own constituents; and the delivery of police patrol jeeps to all the 1,490 municipalities in the country.

The DILG Chief said he is confident that in the past five years under the Aquino administration, the Filipinos have already experienced and enjoyed the first fruits of Daang Matuwid, which is anchored in good governance, transparency, honesty in the delivery of services to the people.
